Intake Process

The Columbia Housing Authority (CHA) is currently accepting Public Housing applications.  Applications must be made in person through CHA’s ’s Intake Office, which is located at the Administration Building, 201 Switzler Street, Columbia, Missouri 65203.  Applications are may be picked up at the front reception desk Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Completed applications are accepted by appointment with the Intake Coordinator.

All persons in the family that are over the age of 17 must be present for an application to be accepted.  Applicants will be interviewed at the time they turn in applications. 

For an application to be accepted and processed, everyone 18 and over must have:

• Photo identification
• Social Security Card
• Verifiable proof of income* from all sources

...and everyone 17 and under must have:

• Birth certificate or other proof of birth
• Social Security Card
• Verifiable proof of income* from all sources

 

*Proof of income can be:

• Pay stubs for the last three months
• Letter on company letterhead, and signed by a supervisor or other representative of the organization, showing number of hours worked per week, pay per hour, job title, and phone number
• Printout from the Missouri Department of Social Services – Children’s Division for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), General Relief, or from babysitting wages
• Printout from Child Support or from Courthouse showing Child Support amounts
• Letter from Social Security and/or Veterans Affairs showing benefit amounts

All sources of income must be documented for your application to be complete.  Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Once an application is received and accepted by the CHA Intake Office, a criminal history check is processed and landlord references are obtained.  Once the background checks and all other documentation are received and verified, the eligible applicant is placed on the appropriate waiting list(s).

As an applicant reaches the top of the waiting list, a notification letter is sent to the address provided on the application with instructions to schedule a pre-move in appointment with the appropriate Public Housing Manager.

Please note:  applications will not be mailed to addresses within Boone County, Missouri.  Boone County residents may pick up an application from the front desk of CHA’s Administration Building at 201 Switzler Street, Columbia, Missouri 65203.
