Project History
In March 2009, the Columbia Housing Authority completed construction on the McBaine Avenue Townhomes affordable housing project. Five attached fully-accessible townhomes were constructed consisting of 3 three-bedroom and 2 two-bedroom townhomes. This urban infill project provides the opportunity for affordable homeownership for five low-income elderly and/or disabled households, and helps promote community stability in Columbia’s central city resulting in safer, healthier, and more vital neighborhoods.
The McBaine Avenue Townhomes project received $669,000 funding from the Missouri Housing Development Commission (MHDC) for this affordable housing project. In addition to the MHDC funding, the City of Columbia granted a $150,000 HOME Grant to acquire the land, and provided an $18,000 Community Development Block Grant for demolition of previously existing buildings. In addition, The Callaway Bank made a $10,000 grant to provide startup capital for this project.
For over 50 years, CHA has worked diligently to strengthen central Columbia neighborhoods by building and operating safe, healthy, and affordable public housing. The McBaine Townhomes project provides an important catalyst for CHA in broadening its scope in developing affordable housing and homeownership opportunities in Columbia’ central city.
