The mission of the Columbia Housing Authority is to provide safe, healthy, and affordable housing opportunities to low-income individuals and families. In carrying out this mission, the Columbia Housing Authority seeks partnerships and collaborative efforts with local organizations and other governmental agencies that provide services to improve the quality of life for our residents.
With nearly 1,900 units of assisted housing, the Columbia Housing Authority (CHA) represents approximately 9% of Columbia’s rental market.
CHA’s two major housing assistance programs are subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
CHA Manages and Operates 719 Public Housing Units
CHA Administers 1,062 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers
CHA Offers Services That Promote Education, Self-Sufficiency, & Independent Living
Board of Commissioners
The Columbia Housing Authority is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners appointed by the Mayor of the City of Columbia.
The Board of Commissioners holds monthly public meetings and is responsible for reviewing and approving the CHA Annual Plan, Five Year Plan, Operational and Capital Budgets, new programs, and operational policies which guide the organization. The Board of Commissioners hires and evaluates the Chief Executive Officer who is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations.

The Columbia Housing Authority is requesting public comment on proposed changes to our public housing lease. The proposed lease changes deal with the following issues:
Requirements for appropriate window treatments (curtains, shades, etc.) The use of plastic bags, sheets, blankets, or other items not designed as a window covering will be prohibited.
Prohibition against parking storage trailers or RVs on CHA property.
Requirement for a 60-Day notice to vacate if a resident is requesting to move prior to the end date of the lease.
Termination of lease upon death of resident.
Public Comment Notice and a full description of the proposed lease changes.
Families enrolled in CHA Family Self-Sufficiency Program
Experience Great Success in 2009
Columbia, Missouri - February 5, 2010 - Families who participated in the Columbia Housing Authority’s Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher and Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency Programs experienced great success in 2009 in their ability to obtain and maintain employment, set and reach career goals, obtain higher education, and gain financial stability. The Section 8 FSS Program started in 2006 followed by the Public Housing FSS Program in 2008. Both Family Self-Sufficiency Programs are sponsored by the Columbia Housing Authority and located in the newly established Family Self-Sufficiency Center inside the newly remodeled J.W. "Blind" Boone Community Center.
During the past year, 40 families participating in the Section 8 FSS program increased their household income by an average of $10,013. Public Housing FSS families increased their household income by an average of $3,573. Six families reached their goals and completed the program in 2009. Over $20,000 was disbursed to these graduates from their escrow savings accounts. Additional program successes are listed below.
